Default A Win Is A Win

    written by NASCAR1948 > NASCAR.COM Blogs

A NASCAR Nationwide Series conundrum is the number of double-duty drivers who compete in the series, either fulltime or on a partial schedule.

Jamie McMurray is one of those double-duty drivers. But, something that gets lost in said conundrum is McMurray, like the majority of his Cup peers, paid his dues in the Nationwide Series before making it on the big stage. He spent two full years in the Nationwide Series from 2002-03 before making his jump to Cup, where he’s still had to pay up. Nothing’s been easy. But this year, he’s had an epic season, winning the Daytona 500 and the Brickyard 400. His three poles are a career best.

Saturday night, he was thrilled with his Nationwide Series win at Atlanta Motor Speedway. He also was politely unapologetic about taking home the trophy ahead of a hard-charging Kyle Busch – who was aiming for a record-setting 11th win of the year – and Nationwide Series regulars, many of whom aspire to get to McMurray’s current level. J Mac was one of 13 Cup drivers in the race, and one of eight who finished in the top 10.

But the way he sees it, he’s earned the opportunity to compete – and win – on any level.

See, McMurray has won eight career Nationwide races. With six different organizations. And although he parlayed his Nationwide success into his first fulltime Cup deal with Chip Ganassi in 2003, his trek has hardly been smooth. Matter of fact, after leaving Ganassi, he said his four years with Roush Racing were tough. He used the term “having been beat up” by his fourth year with that organization.

Now, he feels like what goes around comes around. Wins are wins and they mean a lot to a guy like McMurray.

“It’s amazing how when everything’s going your way, how it’s all just going your way. I had four years of things not going my way so I really appreciate it right now,” he said.

    Hard to argue with that.
