NOTES - Jamie McMurray and the No.1 McDonald’s Chevrolet

Atlanta History: McMurray will be making his 17th NASCAR Sprint Cup Series (NSCS) start at Atlanta Motor Speedway (AMS) this weekend. His best start was third in the March 2009 event while his best finish of sixth came in 2005, with Ganassi. McMurray has four top-10 finishes at the 1.54-mile track. In the last four years at AMS, McMurray has made 720 total green flag lap passes, ranking second among 57 drivers.

Bristol Weekend: Jamie McMurray and the No.1 Bass Pro Shops / Tracker Boats Team headed to Bristol looking to continue their surge towards the top 12 in points-the cutoff for the chase. After starting from the seventh-position, McMurray would work his way towards the top five before the first pit stop on lap 58. Upon entering his pit stall, McMurray slid through his pit stall. The error would force McMurray to reverse his Chevrolet, and the extra time on pit road would cost him six positions. McMurray would retake the green flag in the 12th position, and quickly showed the strength of his Chevrolet, racing back to his starting position of seventh. McMurray would have another pit incident leaving his stall with a missing left-rear lug nut after a pit-stop on lap 125. McMurray would be forced to return to pit road, and the team would take the green flag on lap 131 in the 27th position. Once again, McMurray would race his way back through the field, and by lap 302 he was inside the top five, running in the fourth-position. McMurray led for 11 laps from lap 389 to lap 399 before finishing in the third-position.

Welcome Back McDonald’s: McMurray and the No. 1 team will carry the “Golden Arches” of McDonald’s for this weekend’s event at Atlanta. McDonald’s was last on the No. 1 Chevrolet four weeks ago at Watkins Glen, as McMurray finished sixth. This will mark the eighth event of 2010 for McDonald’s as the sponsor on the No. 1 Chevrolet. McMurray has enjoyed quite a bit of success with the “Golden Arches” thus far this season, with two pole awards (Darlington and Chicago), one outside pole starting position (Watkins Glen), two top-five finishes (Darlington 2nd and Chicago 5th), and a sixth-place finish at Watkins Glen.

Race to the Chase: After a third-place finish at Bristol, McMurray advanced two-positions to 13th in the 2010 NSCS point’s standings. The finish marked McMurray’s third top-five and fourth top-10 finish in the last six races. The No. 1 team now sits just 100 points and one spot back from 12th- the cutoff to the Chase.

2010 in the Numbers: With 12 races remaining this season McMurray has already surpassed previous single-season records. His two wins this season, the Daytona 500 and the Brickyard 400, mark the first time he has won multiple NSCS races in a season. McMurray currently has three pole awards in 2010, never before having more than one in a season and doubling his career total NSCS poles. He has led 244 laps, beating his previous season best of 224 in 2004. He also sits in the top-10 among the following performance-generated categories:
    • 207 fastest laps run (tied for 10th with points leader Kevin Harvick)
    • Laps led (10th)
    • Miles led (10th)

Inside View: McMurray and the No. 1 McDonald’s Chevrolet will carry an in-car camera this weekend at Atlanta. Fans be sure to pay attention for the multiple angles and views offered by this camera in this Sunday’s 500-mile event as McMurray drives 325 laps around the 1.54-mile oval.

Visit McDonald’s: Stop at the local McDonald’s to curve your hunger tastes for breakfast, lunch or dinner. The McDonald’s closest to the speedway is just 1.8 miles north located at 11281 Tara Boulevard, Hampton, GA 30228.

Georgia on His Mind: Larry Hart, transporter driver for the No. 1 team, is a Georgia native hailing from Chatsworth, Georgia.

    CHASSIS INFO

No. 1 McDonald’s Chevrolet (NSCS): Chassis #1016. Crew Chief Kevin “Bono” Manion has elected to bring a brand new chassis #1016 this weekend to the Atlanta Motor Speedway.

    -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
    NATIONWIDE

Jamie McMurray No. 88 Hellmann’s Chevrolet “Atlanta is big, fast and wide enough to give you plenty of different options on where to run your car. The last time I ran the Hellmann’s paint scheme was back at Charlotte and we struggled a bit in that race. I’m looking forward to getting another chance to get the Hellmann’s Chevrolet up front. It’d be great to get Pops (Tony Eury Sr.) and the entire 88 bunch their first win of the season this weekend. We’ve been close over the past couple months. I’m sure there will be some tough competition with a lot of the Cup guys running this race, but we’re ready for the challenge. We’re here to win races, so that’s what we need to be doing.”

JR MOTORSPORTS NOTEBOOK – EIGHTH FOR McMURRAY – McMurray will compete in his eighth race in the No. 88 Hellmann’s Chevrolet for JRM this weekend. He amassed three top-five and five top-10 finishes in his previous seven starts (Texas, Talladega, Richmond, Darlington, Dover, Charlotte and Chicago) for the team. McMurray’s average finish in those races is 7.0. The Hellmann’s team finished fourth in the Atlanta race one year ago.

McMURRAY AT ATLANTA – McMurray has one win (2002), one top-five and three top-10s at Atlanta Motor Speedway with six laps led. His last NNS start at the facility was in 2008 driving for Roush Fenway Racing. WISE AT ATLANTA – Wise will make his track debut at Atlanta Motor Speedway behind the wheel of the No. 7 JRM Chevrolet. He has previous experience at other 1.5-mile facilities, including Kentucky Motor Speedway, Charlotte Motor Speedway, Texas Motor Speedway and Chicagoland Speedway.

SEASON UPDATE FOR HELLMANN’S TEAM – The No. 88 Hellmann’s team has earned six top-five and 11 top-10 finishes in 2010 with 34 laps led. Jamie McMurray has secured three top-five and five top-10 finishes, with Ron Fellows earning one top-five and two top-10 finishes. Elliott Sadler notched one top-10 finish and team owner Dale Earnhardt Jr. contributed one top-five and one top-10 finish. Aric Almirola’s impressive run at ORP added one top-five and one top-10 to the team’s tally. Kelly Bires also put in a single top-10 finish on the season.

TEAM POINTS POSITION – The No. 88 Hellmann’s team are ranked eighth in the 2010 owner points.

Jeff Owens picked Jamie to win!

    THIS WEEK’S WINNER
    Jamie McMurray

Isn’t this a big race? And doesn’t McMurray win most of the big races these days?

Well, it’s almost a big race. Or at least it used to be, way back when the Labor Day weekend event was called the Southern 500 and held at Darlington Raceway.

Now it’s at Atlanta, but it’s still a pretty big event. It’s the next-to-last race before the Chase and some drivers need to step up, either in a last-ditch effort to make the Chase or to earn valuable bonus points by winning a race.

McMurray is one of those drivers scrambling to make the Chase, and he’s proven this year that he can step up in big races.

He has three other things going for him:

    • He participated in a tire test at Atlanta in June, perhaps giving him a slight advantage on the competition;

    • He finished second earlier this year at Charlotte, a track similar in size and shape to Atlanta;

    • His Earnhardt Ganassi Racing team has a strong record of late at Atlanta, where teammate Juan Pablo Montoya has finished third in the past two Atlanta races.

McMurray will step up again, outrunning Montoya and Kevin Harvick for his third win of the season.

    Top Five:
    1. Jamie McMurray
    2. Kevin Harvick
    3. Juan Pablo Montoya
    4. David Reutimann
    5. Kasey Kahne

That was awesome tonight! I just happened to turn it on. I wasn't even sure how late the race would be on, so I checked and he had just gotten the lead!! woohoo...any win works for me! This is actually the first Nationwide race i've ever seen him win. I always missed his other wins in this series.

Nice run in the Nationwide series tonight! May only be a Nationwide win, but a win is a win. Should give Jamie some good confidence and momentum for tomorrow night. A weekend sweep would be great... Oh, and this is the first year he's won in the Cup and Nationwide series since 2002. And his first year ever with multiple Cup wins. Good year keeps getting better. Maybe we'll pull a rabbit out of his hat and make the Chase. That'd be magic. (Kudos to anyone who remembers that Sprint commercial with Jamie and Kasey Kahne)

JAMIE McMURRAY (No. 88 Hellmans/BJ's Chevrolet, Great Clips 300 winner):
"We unloaded today and pretty much had the fastest car on the track. We just had a really good day. Pops (crew chief Tony Eury, Sr.) did a good job adjusting the car. I felt like at the beginning of the race I had the best car and it felt like we had a second- or third-place car in the middle. At the end, it just had tons of speed and certainly getting out in front on that last restart was critical. I really thought when we came to the green there, whoever got in front it was going to be hard to pass that guy. Fortunately we got a jump there and got ahead of Kyle [Busch]. It's the same thing every week -- for the car out front, the clean air is huge."
Q: What did you learn for the Cup race tomorrow: "My comfort level (for Sunday) is pretty low. We didn't have a very good day today. What we've been doing at the mile-and-a-half track just didn't work for us. We struggled here today; we qualified OK, just not where we needed to be. But the track changed -- and man, the cars are so much different, but the track's going to change the same."

TONY EURY, SR. (No. 88 crew chief): "We wanted to save all we could until the end. We knew there would be a couple of cautions at the end -- we wanted to make sure we had tires at the end -- so we stayed out that one stop when [Kevin] Harvick stopped. We knew how big tires were going to be at the end. We got in front in that clean air and set sails."
