NOTES - Jamie McMurray and No. 1 McDonald's Team

Watkins Glen History: This weekend marks McMurray’s eighth NASCAR Sprint Cup Series (NSCS) start at Watkins Glen International. In his seven prior starts at the track McMurray has an average start of 19.9 and an average finish of 20th. McMurray’s best start came in 2005 with 11th and best finish of third in 2006. He has only one DNF, coming just short of finishing last year’s event due to engine failure.

Pocono Recap: McMurray captured his first Brickyard 400 victory last weekend at Indianapolis Motor Speedway and welcomed the opportunity to return to Pocono, a track that has admittedly been one of McMurray’s arch enemies throughout his NSCS career. However, coming off an exciting victory and welcoming a new partner in AXE Twist to the team, McMurray and the No. 1 Team looked to change their luck at the “Tricky Triangle.” McMurray and team fought handling issues for the majority of the weekend at Pocono Raceway, but did place a top-10 starting position of ninth. From the start of the 500-mile event, McMurray would fight an ill-handling race car and the team would have to battle back from two pit road speeding violations that caused a loss of two laps. Late-race strategy by McMurray’s Crew Chief, Kevin “Bono” Manion, as rain approached, put McMurray in position to finish inside the top 15, and possibly the top 10. But, the rain dispersed and the field would go back to racing. McMurray’s No.1 AXE Twist Machine would fall off quicker than expected, and he would bring his machine home on the lead lap in a respectable 22nd position.

Golden Arches Return: McMurray and team will welcome back the familiar red, black and gold colors of McDonald’s this weekend when the NSCS returns to Watkins Glen International Raceway. The Golden Arches have seen an incredible amount of success this season, particularly at Darlington and Chicagoland Speedway. At Darlington, the No.1 McDonald’s Team set a new track qualifying record, going on to finish second in the Southern 500. McMurray and team also brought home the second pole award for McDonald’s at Chicagoland Speedway en-route to a fifth-place finish at McDonald’s home track.

McMurray Makes A Pit Stop at Binghamton, New York McDonald’s: 2010 Daytona 500 Champion and Brickyard 400 Winner Jamie McMurray will make a pit stop at the McDonald’s located at 167 Main Street in Binghamton, NY on Thursday, Aug. 5 from 5-6pm ET. The driver will sign autographs for fans in attendance and spend some time in the kitchen with the McDonald’s “Drive-Thru Crew” making his favorite sandwich, The Big Mac.

Honorary Chairman: Chip Ganassi, who is leading his racing teams through one of the most successful motorsports seasons in history this year, has agreed to serve as the Honorary Chairman of the 22nd Annual Motorsports Hall of Fame of America Induction Ceremony. The ceremony will be held on the evening of Wednesday, August 25, in downtown Detroit, Michigan. As Honorary Chairman, Ganassi will preside over the formal black-tie induction ceremony at the Fillmore Theater in the heart of downtown Detroit. The Motorsports Hall of Fame of America features more than 30 racing and high performance vehicles. The constantly changing collection features racing machines from the motorsports world of Indy Cars, Stock Cars, Sports Cars, Can-Am, Trans-Am, Sprint Cars, Powerboats, Truck Racing, Drag Racing, Motorcycles, Air Racing and even Snowmobiles.

    CHASSIS INFO

No. 1 McDonald’s Chevrolet (NSCS): Chassis #1012. The No. 1 McDonald’s Chevrolet team will bring chassis #1012 to Watkins Glen. This chassis was first used at Infineon Raceway in June where McMurray finished 15th. The team also tested the chassis two weeks ago at Road Atlanta.

yea, we hope so. I was actually in charlotte the night he won for the first time, it was a good race, i remember it was actually a day race, the last one before they moved it to a night race but it actually became a night race because it rained for like 4 hours and it started about 7 or so. i just remember it was cold, and at the time i lived in daytona beach and drove up like a dummy with my shorts and t shirt because when i left my apartment it was in the 80's. i learned a lot about how to go to races after sitting in the low 60s windy rain.

I just want to say I hope they put a lot of emphasis on qualifying even if some race trim gets sacraficed because looking back through my memory his best road races are always where he qualifies well and that goes for so many. There are soooooo many idiots at this deal, and the only way to avoid then, in my opinion is to be IN FRONT of them. When you qualify 22nd here, I think you are asking for trouble. they really need to make a top 5 qualifying run so they can cruise and take care of the car. you cant control your destiny here so many times when you get to the forst pit stop and you have passed 6 cars because you started 28th and everyone you have to pass is a Sam Hornish impersonator. Just hope quals go well, the winner almost always comes from the top 5 or 6 cars gere. I relaize it can be done from anywhere, just saying the winner is usually a good qualifier as well and since his pole at Sonoma in 07 his road race quals have been pretty bad. I just think they need to put an emphasis on it. But this is not criticism, he has the most poles in Nascar, so lets hope they have a good one in their pocket tommorow.

Crap. I just read in the "Race Thread" where Jamie was at the McDonald's in Binghamton, NY on Thursday. Wouldn't you just know it. We are suppose to go there this coming Monday. That is to Binghamton not McDonald's.

wow. that was a good qualifying run, much better feelings about th erace now. I really believe he would of had the pole, especially beating the 42 car but that lap from the 99 was something else, and he looked like he even missed a few marks but great lap, great pit stall selection and as long as the 42 does not act like a 2 year old on the start or restart all should be good, play their cards right and get win number 3. I really want him to get a road win because the never talk about him in the press as being good as these tracks because all they look at are finishes and those speak nothing to the performance. He had 2 of these in the bag at Sonoma if you ask me and idiots wrecked him once and ran out of gas another time. lets see and hope.

I tel you what, he wins another race this year I could really care less about the chase, I would wonder what others would prefer, the Chase win no more wins or another win and no chase, I likely dont need to get the answer to know how others feel. I think tommorow can be very good chance if they dont pit him out of it and they dont lose the track position, that to me will be the real key, keeping the position all day so you can race at the end

and....I remember all those media types wondering how he would like playing second fiddle to JPM. Wonder how come they dont write follow up stories to their own dumb questions. Ii bet if he wins tommorow on a road course after also winning Indy that JPM's head will pop off and go rolling down pit road.

JAMIE MCMURRAY, NO. 1 MCDONALD’S CHEVROLET, QUALIFIED 2ND:

ON TOMORROW’S RACE: “It was a really good lap for us. We were eighth in practice and I actually went over and drew the qualifying ball this weekend. Everyone was harassing me because it was so late. It seemed to work out for us. I don’t think the track slowed down as much as normal. The track temp was definitely a little bit hotter when we went out than some of the guys earlier did. After seeing Carl’s (Edwards) lap and how fast he was able to go, I knew the track had pretty good grip in it. Honestly, I thought I had a pole-setting lap until the last two turns. I felt like I got through the first part of the race track really, really well and had a little bit of brake fade coming back towards the pits and six and seven -- maybe gave up a little there. I thought it was a really good lap.”

DID YOU WORK WITH JUAN PABLO MONTOYA TO GET YOUR CARS SIMILAR?: “Honestly I don’t know what they have in their car. We went and tested Road Atlanta last week after the Brickyard and changed a little bit of our brake package from what we ran at Sonoma and I think what Juan (Pablo Montoya) has and changed a few suspension parts. I’m pretty sure that our cars are not identical, but the team has done a really good job since Sonoma at getting our road course cars better. We didn’t feel like, as a group, we had very good cars at Sonoma. They changed the front end and moved some stuff around and I think, obviously, us qualifying second and third here shows that they’ve made our cars quite a bit better than what we had in June.”

HOW DO YOU HAVE A SOLID POINTS DAY TOMORROW?: “I don’t really care about having a solid points day. It just is what it is. I think for us it’s about just having the right pit strategy. I don’t think you’re going to see people put tires on late in the race and make much ground up. It’s going to be about having good fuel mileage, which we felt like we did in practice, in the first practice and then just having that track position. I think if you can be in the first four or six, you will be in good shape in turn one, through the esses and all that. It seems like when you’re back, 10th or 12th, is where all the stuff happens. Starting up front will be important and I think that Bono (Kevin Manion, crew chief) does as good of a job as any crew chief at having a plan and sticking to that plan. I think that the way our fuel mileage worked out will be fine for our strategy for tomorrow.”

WHAT MADE THE DIFFERENCE FOR YOU TO START UP FRONT?: “We’re just having a really good year. It seems like when everything is going your way, it all goes well. This has actually been a pretty good track for me. I ran third here a few years ago and really had a shot to win towards the end of the race. Just really good cars, engines and our team is just working really well together right now. Really happy with everything.”

Good Luck to Jamie and the entire 1 team today. A win would be fantastic, but a top 5 finish would be awesome!
